Neck Pain: Sleep Pillow & Exercise

Methods of relieving neck pain clearly show that the combination of neck exercises prescribed by a physiotherapist and the correct sleeping posture are the most successful remedy.

As Dr. Hugh A Smythe at the University of Toronto, Ontario and colleagues clearly conclude from trials they carried out that results “indicate that subjects with chronic neck pain should be treated by health professionals trained to teach both exercises and the appropriate use of a neck support pillow during sleep; either strategy alone will not give the desired clinical benefit.”

Researchers separated 151 men and women with chronic neck pain into four groups:

Group 1: Received massage and hot and cold therapy

Group 2: Received neck exercise

Group 3: Received sleep using a neck-supporting pillow

Group 4: Received exercise and sleep using a neck-supporting pillow

Neck exercises took 5 to 10 minutes and involved movements of the neck, head and shoulders under the supervision of a physiotherapist.

Results were conclusive: By week 12 of the trial, participants from Group 4 using a neck pillow and exercise reported significant neck pain relief, whilst there was no improvement amongst the other three groups.

Note: Participants in this study did not suffer from fibromyalgia. This information was published in the January 2007 edition of the Journal of Rheumatology.
