Knee Arthritis: Wrap Around Knee Support
Rheumatoid arthritis of the knee does not normally exist only in the knee but probably affects other joints within the person’s body as well.
RA affects between 0.5% and 1% of the population.Women are affected three times more often than men. The peak incidence is between the ages of 25 and 55 years.
- approximately 400,000 people in England and Wales have this condition
- RA often impacts severely on quality of life and it is estimated that 40% of people with RA will stop working within 5 years of diagnosis
- life expectancy of people with RA is reduced by 5 -10 years compared with that of people without the condition, and 35 - 50% of this excess risk is accounted for by cardiovascular (CV) mortality
The cause is unknown, but an autoimmune mechanism involving viral infection has been postulated.
Symptoms: The knee, like any affected joint, is warm and there is effusion, limited movement, muscle wasting, synovial thickening, tenderness and pain. There may also be secondary joint deformation.
Treatment: This is usually with conservative measures using knee splinting methods or steroid injections.
